FAKE Manuka Honey on the world market!
The British Food Safety Agency (FSA) has issued an international warning about false and illegal claims on the labels of Manuka honey, after analysis showed that more than 50 percent of the products with that label does not have almost any of the active substances of this esteemed New Zealand Manuka bush tree named Leptospermum scoparium.
The study, conducted by the research agency for Food and the Environment (FERA), which is normally the scientific arm of the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Development , it was discovered that many Manuka products that are sold on the world market have none of the ingredients for that claimed that the ” miracle “, and that in some jars had not even found honey from Manuka for other plant species.
Specifically, the agency made in the 2012th and 2013th analysis for a large number of Manuka products that are distributed worldwide. Furthermore, additional testing in Hong Kong revealed that 14 of the 55 samples of Manuka honey was fake!
Although there are counterfeiters and other countries , it turns out that most companies that sell wrongly labeled Manuka honey on the British market comes from New Zealand , so that now the most prominent New Zealand primary producers of bee products face greater scrutiny , not only in the Europe, but also in the United States and China.
Potentially huge fraud
By New Zealand Unique Manuka Factor® Honey Association (UMFHA) they said that in the general is known to be in the world market more Manuka honey than they produce it, they blamed the competent institutions that they do not implement proper controls.
“We, the beekeepers – the primary producers in New Zealand annually produces about 1700 tons of Manuka honey, so it’s incredible that in the UK alone each year in pots filled with 1800 tons of Manuka and sell another 10 thousand tons worldwide”, explained President UMFHA ‘s John Rawcliffe for Radio New Zealand and expressed satisfaction with the collapse of the sale of falsely declared Manuka, as beekeepers are appealing for some time, and also announced stricter controls to protect consumers. Likewise, a spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture of New Zealand said that it has revised the definition of Manuka honey that will be internationally recognized and supported by solid scientific evidence, therefore, believes that the manufacturers and the ministry must cooperate better in order to create reliable standards.
Otherwise, it is estimated that the annual production of honey in New Zealand amounts to 120 million New Zealand dollars (96 million U.S. Dollars).
Compared with other types of honey, the researchers argue that Manuka honey has the strongest anti-inflammatory effect and helps in the treatment of antibiotic resistant bacteria that commonly infect wounds. He showed amazing results in clinical trials, and is used in the treatment of skin ulcers, burns, and for the treatment of respiratory ailments.
An important fact is that not every Manuka honey has healing effects. Only that Manuka honey has UMF label used for the therapeutic treatment of various health problems. Peroxide activity is responsible for the high antibacterial activity of Manuka honey.
