Varroa Mite Treatment with Hopguard
According to Vita (Europe) Limited, European beekeepers should get in the second half of 2015 new powerful weapon against varroa mite named HopGuard, which has already been upgraded and named Hopguard II. Till that time manufacturer (BetaTech) expect to get full registration for HopGuard.
HopGuard and Hopguard II
HopGuard is a varroa mite control treatment that uses natural food-based compounds from hop. Actually its not so new discovery, BetaTech company has already registered it in USA where you can already get it.
Dr Max Watkins, Technical Director of Vita (Europe) Ltd, said: “We are very impressed by HopGuard because of its efficacy and safety, and because it can be used at any time of year even if supers are on the hive.“
Advantages of HopGuard Strips
1. You can use it at any time of year, even during a honey flow. Yes, you read it right, it will be first European (registered) treatment against varroa that can be used any time of year.
2. Doesn’t effect on process of queen-rearing (no negative effects on egg laying) like some other treatments (Formic acid, Check Mite …).
3. Strips of HopGuard disintegrate naturally. You don’t need to remove strips, bees will remove the end particles from the hive during normal hive-cleaning activities.
How to use HopGuard Strips?
According to producer HopGuard, the use pattern for Hopguard is to apply 2 strips for 7-10 days and repeat a further twice – that is 2 strips x 3 per treatment (6 strips per treatment needed). For Hopguard II, 2 strips are applied for 14 days (in the USA).… strips must be hung between frames.
Is most effective when used during the pre-pollination period (before sealed brood), midsummer, and at the onset of winter brood development.
It can be applied up to 3 times per year.
The price in the US now being from $40 – $50 per pack (around $4 per hive treatment). For the European market price of HopGuard is yet not known.

On beesource.com there are few feedbacks … “HopGuard is great, if used in 3 weekly treatments in a row. A one time treatment, as the package states, is insufficient”.

We all hope that HopGuard is not just another natural treatment for Varroa mites. But for more experience review of this treatment we have to wait until 2016, when we, hopefully can test it..
