The organic beekeeper Ventimiglia from Trapani (Italy) is the winner of the seventh BIOLMIEL edition

The Hedysarum coronarium (sulla) honey from Sicily is the winner of the prize that took place in Apulia (Italy). The second place went to Agribetz Bio (Emilia-Romagna, Italy) and the third to La Girlanda (Abruzzo, Italy). Best polifloral, the honey of Apicoltura Zipoli (Lombardy, Italy). The international jury evaluated in Bari around 170 honeys coming from different countries.

BARI, Italy – Is the organic monofloral honey of the Sicilian company Ventimiglia the winner of the VII BIOLMIEL, the only international prize for organic honeys, that took place in Apulia, with events in Bari and in Taranto.
The awarding took place on the 7th December in Taranto, at the end of a workshop on beekeeping and bees preservation, that saw the intervention of academic professionals, experts and beekeepers, that met in the Murialdo Oratory in the Tamburi quarter, an area that today is the symbol of environmental issues related to the Italian industry Ilva.

Here is the list of first places assigned, selected by an international jury made up by experts coming from all over Europe:
Best monofloral (and winner, based on scoring): Az. Agr. Ventimiglia from Trapani, with  Hedysarum coronarium (sulla) honey; second place went Agribetz Bio of Lugagnano Val d’Arda (Piacenza), for acacia honey; third, Sideritis syriaca honey of La Girlanda di Mario Iacobacci, produced in Ortona dei Marsi (L’Aquila).
Best polifloral: Apicoltura Zipoli di Ballarini Ancilla, produced at Romanengo (Cremona, Italy); second, Az. Agr. Vaccaro from Potenza (Italy); third, Biofattoria Licineto di Caienza sul Trigno (Chieti, Italy).

Other awards went to the best foreign honey,  a thyme honey produced by the beekeeper Kohilas John (Greece), and to the best honey from the hosting region: a Citrus spphoney produced by Alveus di Giuseppe Masciulli in Martina Franca.
The international jury, in the Chamber of Commerce of Bari, examined for two days the organoleptic characteristics of honeys, all together 170 samples coming from Italy, Croatia, Spain, Slovenia, Romania, Germany and United Arab Emirates.
Organized by CiBI – Italian Consortium for Organic, and from CRA-Api of Bologna the research center on bees and beekeeping, in Bari BIOLMIEL this time included also two conferences on honey and beekeeping kept by the coordinator Nino Paparella and two free seminars conducted by Gian Luigi Marcazzan (CRA-Api), also panel leader of the BIOLMIEL international jury.

BIOLMIEL selection and awarding criteria

Are allowed for the competition all organic honeys, Italian and foreign, certified according to European or other standards, both national or international. All samples are analyzed for water content, that should be lower than 18 %, and for HMF (a quality and freshness indicator) that should be lower than 10 mg/kg: this last indicator can be up to 15% for heather or tropical honeys. Samples of honeys are then judged by an international jury of experts according to the declared category (monofloral or polyfloral) for visual, olfactory, tactile and tasting characteristics. Monofloral honeys are judged for their correspondence to the declared type (acacia, sunflower, lime tree, etc.) in appearance and organoleptic characteristics, while polyfloral honeys are judged mostly for their appearance and pleasantness. Best honeys receive a high quality gold or silver medal, together with the judgement of the jury and the results of the chemical-physical analysis.

BIOLMIEL – that stem from  the parallel international prize BIOL for organic extra virgin olive oils – was carried out under the patronage of Apulia Region – Rural Development and Agricultural Policy Area,   in cooperation with the organic Italian producers association BIOLITALIA.
